Heavy rain triggers waterlogging, traffic disruptions across Delhi-NCR

West Bengal continued to witness cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall on Thursday, as monsoon remained active across the state.

In Kolkata, the weather on Thursday stayed mostly overcast through the day, with brief spells of light rain or thundershowers. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 27.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.1 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity remained extremely high, between 97 and 98 percent. The total rainfall over a 24-hour period ending 8:30 a.m. Thursday stood at 11.6 mm.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area that previously lay over Gangetic West Bengal now lies over south Jharkhand and the neighbouring region.

AAP Delhi convenor Saurabh Bhardwaj took a jibe at PWD minister Parvesh Verma saying, "For the past few months, we have seen only photo sessions in the name of de-silting work. The Lieutenant Governor, the Chief Minister, ministers, entire delegations visited sites, claiming there would be no more waterlogging in Delhi. Minister Parvesh Verma had even said that he had prepared around 400 suspension letters to act against officials responsible for any waterlogging. But since flooding occurred across the city, how many officials were actually suspended? The government claimed each area had a designated officer accountable, so were any of them suspended as promised?"

Major roads in Gurgaon were left congested after heavy showers that began at around 7 pm Wednesday led to waterlogging across the city in what residents said was an issue they faced during the first downpour every monsoon.

The district administration said the city received 133 mm of rainfall till 8 am on Thursday. Of this, 103 mm was received between 7.30 pm and 9 pm on Wednesday. This year, the monsoon arrived in Gurgaon on June 29.

Monsoon lashed parts of Delhi-NCR Wednesday evening, bringing much-needed relief from humidity and heat, with temperatures dropping to 23 degrees Celsius.

The downpour led to heavy waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several areas, particularly in Gurgaon, where visuals showed significant flooding.

BJP president JP Nadda visited flood-ravaged areas of Mandi on Wednesday, where cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides have caused widespread destruction.

He assured that the Union government would make every possible effort to support and rehabilitate the affected people of Himachal Pradesh.

According to State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) data, 174 roads, including 136 in the worst-hit Mandi district, were closed while 162 transformers and 755 water supply schemes were affected till Wednesday evening, with the state suffering losses to the tune of around Rs 740 crore.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi today received a total of 8 complaints between 6 to 9pm via call and hotline. These included four water-logging complaints, two from South Zone and one each from City SP Zone, and Shahdra South Zone.

Additionally, four tree felling complaints were reported— three from Civil Line zone and one Central zone.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for Nagpur and Wardha, an 'orange' alert for Amravati and Yavatmal, and a 'yellow' alert for Akola, Washim, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Bhandara and Gondia districts of the Vidarbha region on Wednesday.

As per the IMD's regional meteorological centre, Nagpur recorded 172.2 mm rainfall in nine hours between 8.30 pm on Tuesday, and 5.30 am on Wednesday.

Delhi on Wednesday recorded a minimum temperature of 26.4 degrees Celsius, with the weather office predicting moderate rain throughout the day, news agency PTI reported.

The relative humidity at 8.30 am was 81 per cent.

The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 34 degrees Celsius.

The air quality was recorded in the satisfactory category as the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 9 am stood at 83. (PTI)

Modak Sagar Dam, which is amongst the seven lakes catering to Mumbai's potable water demands, filled to capacity and started overflowing during the early hours of Wednesday. This is the first amongst the seven lakes to overflow this season.

Last year, Modak Sagar Dam had overflowed much later on July 26.

Modak Sagar Lake, along with Tansa and Middle Vaitarna lakes, supplies 455 million litres of water to the city every day.

Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are likely to prevail along and off south Gujarat and adjoining north Gujarat coast, Konkan, Goa, Karnataka coasts and adjoining sea areas, over southern parts of northeast Arabian Sea, over parts of westcentral Bay of Bengal, along and off north Andhra Pradesh coast, adjoining Odisha coast, parts of northwest Bay of Bengal and off the Odisha coast, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast.

Parts of Northeast India, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur are likely to witness isolated heavy rainfall over this week, the IMD forecast stated.

Moreover, during the next seven days, light to moderate rainfall is likely at most places in the Northeast, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted.

At most places, light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, with speed reaching up tp 30-40 kmph, shall continue over the region during the next seven days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted isolated heavy rainfall over parts of East, Central, South Peninsular and Northwest India on Wednesday.

East and Central India: Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha are likely to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall today, which will continue in some places till July 15.

Northwest India: Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, East Uttar Pradesh will also experience isolated heavy rainfall on Wednesday, as per the IMD forecast.

South Peninsular India: Coastal Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala and Mahe will also witness isolated heavy rainfall today.

Families of 11 people who have been missing since a series of cloudbursts hit Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on June 30 are left clinging to faint hope.

Of the 11 missing from the Deji village in the Thunag sub-division, five are children, three women, and a man who belonged to two families.

An officer of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) said, “So far, 27 people have been missing in the Mandi district since the multiple cloudbursts struck on June 30. Out of 27, 11 people were washed away in Deji. We have widened the area of our search operation. We are making sincere efforts to trace missing people.”

Heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla has affected tourist footfall, impacting hotel businesses, news agency PTI reported.

Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) MD Tourism Rajiv Kumar told PTI, "This time, a decline in the number of tourists has been recorded in the first week of July. While occupancy was at 29 per cent in July last year, it has dropped to 21 per cent so far this year... To attract tourists, the tourism department has planned to offer discounts of 20 to 40 per cent from July 15 to September 12." (PTI)

Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya woke up to heavy rainfall on Wednesday, news agency ANI reported.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation's City Operation Centre on Wednesday monitored waterlogged areas through CCTV and attended residents' problems over calls, ANI reported, sharing visuals from the waterlogged areas.

NMC Chief Fire & Disaster Management Officer Tushar Barahate told ANI, "Nagpur received heavy rainfall causing waterlogging in the city. We have received 40-50 calls over this and 5-7 trees fallen. Report of people being stuck is also being received for which we have started a rescue operation... Dewatering pumps are being used to reduce the water."

Heavy rainfall early Wednesday triggered waterlogging in parts of Haryana's Charkhi Dadri, as per news agency ANI.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation early Wednesday carried out rescue work using a raft in the New Narsala area of ​​Nagpur, as houses and vehicles submerged under water following incessant rainfall in the city, news agency ANI reported.

Severe waterlogging was witnessed in several parts of the city, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in the city till 11 July, forecasting "heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm." (ANI)

The death toll due to heavy rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh rose to 85, as of Tuesday, with 54 fatalities directly attributed to disasters such as landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, while 31 deaths were due to other causes including road accidents, news agency ANI reported quoting the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

According to the SDMA’s latest cumulative report, the state has faced widespread destruction, with significant damage to life, property, livestock, and infrastructure since last month.

The total monetary loss to both public and private property has crossed Rs. 718 crore. The report also highlighted that 129 people have been injured, 340 homes have been completely destroyed, and over 10,000 animals and poultry have perished across the state. (ANI)

Nagpur District Collector Vipin Itankar has declared a holiday for all Anganwadis, schools and colleges in the district on Wednesday, following IMD’s forecast of heavy rainfall today, as per the ANI report.

The district, which is now under ‘yellow’ alert, has witnessed significant rainfall over the past two days, leading to flooding in low-lying areas.

The Collector stated that roads in many talukas of Nagpur district have been affected by floodwaters. In light of the forecasted heavy rainfall and to avoid any untoward incidents, all Anganwadis, schools, and colleges in the district will remain closed today. (ANI)

Following continuous downpour in Varanasi, the ghats were submerged under water and temples were inundated as water levels of the Ganga river rose above the danger mark on Wednesday, news agency ANI reported.
