Yasin Bhatkal made 27 calls officially from prison phone to family, no mention of ISIS or Syria

"He is housed in a high-security jail where it is not possible to smuggle in a mobile phone from which he could have called. It is impossible,’’ DGP Prisons V K Singh said on Saturday.

Yasin Bhatkal had prepared and planted a pressure cooker IED in a car which was parked near the gate number three of Jama Masjid.

The Telangana State Prisons Department on Saturday stated that Indian Mujahideen mastermind Yasin Bhatkal did not mention anything in his phone calls to his wife or mother about fleeing from the Cherlapally Jail with the help of ISIS from Syria.

“Bhatkal was allowed the facility of using the official prison phone to call his wife and mother following a court order. Before extending the facility to him we forwarded the phone numbers that Bhatkal wanted to make calls to NIA and intelligence agencies which got back saying that they were numbers of his family members and so he could be allowed to make the call. Yasin Bhatkal is allowed to make a five-minute call twice a week. The phone conversations are recorded and are analysed by a senior officer and the contents are shared with investigating agencies like NIA and IB. Bhatkal has so far made 27 calls to his wife and mother and in none of these calls he mentions this alleged plan to escape with help of ISIS or whoever. He is housed in a high-security jail where it is not possible to smuggle in a mobile phone from which he could have called. It is impossible,’’ DGP Prisons V K Singh said on Saturday.

Singh also expressed doubts that a highly motivated terror suspect like Yasin Bhatkal would reveal plans of fleeing with the help of ISIS to his wife over phone.

Saturday morning, a team led by DIG Prisons K Narasimha searched the high security enclosure where Bhatkal and others are lodged and searched for any mobile phones but found nothing.

“It is impossible that Bhatkal called from anywhere else using a cell phone. The phone he can use is the prison phone and we record all conversations which is heard and analysed by a senior officer. We also send the recorded conversations to investigation and security agencies. Today, after reports appeared that Yasin made a call to his wife stating that he will flee from with the help of ISIS, we again went through the recorded conversations. I myself heard 10 recorded conversations while two constables who are conversant with Urdu have heard more than one hour of tape. No where has Yasin Bhatkal mentioned ISIS or Syria or Damascus. Most of the time their conversations are simple like seeking blessings from the Almighty, wishing each other well etc. There is no possibility that he could have used a mobile phone from anywhere else,’’ Narasimha said.
