The External Affairs Ministry has decided to bring back Geeta, a 23-year-old deaf and mute girl who has been stuck in Pakistan for over a decade. The decision came after the Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan T C A Raghavan and his wife met the young woman in Karachi and “believed” that she is an Indian national.

External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday night tweeted, “Indian High Commissioner in Pakistan Mr Raghavan and Mrs Raghavan met Geeta in Karachi today. Our High Commissioner believes that Geeta is an Indian. We will bring Geeta back to India.”

Earlier in the day, Raghavan had told reporters in Karachi, “The purpose of my visit is to find out all details about Geeta’s case and background and try to locate her family and relatives as soon as possible.”

At the Edhi trust shelter home in Karachi, he said, “The fact that I have come here is itself a message of peace from our government.”

Raghavan noted that despite all disputes there was a relation of humanity between Pakistan and India.

Geeta is believed to have mistakenly crossed into Pakistan as a child. She was eight years old when she was found by Pakistan Rangers at the Lahore railway station, reports from the neighbouring country have said.
