Anuja Patil, captain of the Maharashtra women cricket team, has been suspended by Kolhapur District Cricket Association (KDCA) for allegedly creating a Facebook account in the name of a teammate and allegedly posting objectionable messages and sending obscene SMSes.
The action follows a complaint lodged by the father of the victim with KDCA, Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) and the Kolhapur police.
Bharat Purohit, a friend of Anuja, has been booked by the police for helping her. Both Anuja and the alleged victim have represented India.
KDCA president R A Patankar said the father of the victim lodged a complaint on December 28 that Anuja was indulging in character assassination of his daughter. “He alleged Anuja had created a fake Facebook account in the name of his daughter and was chatting through it. Anuja allegedly used abusive and threatening language against the victim and sent objectionable SMSes targeting her,” he said.
“After the police registered offences against Anuja under Information Technology Act and IPC, we barred her from playing local invitational matches.”
KDCA has sent a report to MCA. MCA secretary Sudhakar Shanbag said, “We have received a report from KDCA. A final decision in this matter will be taken by BCCI.”
MCA sources said Anuja had been barred from the challenger tournament which started in Ranchi on January 7. KDCA sources said she was appointed captain a year ago. They said she apparently felt threatened after the alleged victim proved her batting prowess. The alleged victim has also played 20-20 matches for India in Sri Lanka. “It looks like Anuja was feeling uncomfortable by the presence of the victim. She apparently thought she would lose her captaincy,” KDCA sources said.
The family of Anuja claimed it was a conspiracy by vested interests to spoil her career. It has decided to seek anticipatory bail. Hatakanagle police inspector Chandrakant Khaire said the case had been transferred to him from the Pethwadgaon police.
