Navy Chief Admiral Robin Dhowan on Monday said that though the chances (of survival) of the four missing naval personnel in Vishakhapatnam mishap appear grave, the navy will continue its search operations. As per procedures, the Navy has to continue the search for seven days and Dhowan said that the search will continue at least till “November 13”. Sources however added that the navy is not likely to give up hope when it comes to searching for its missing personnel.
Calling the incident “unfortunate” Dhowan, who on Sunday met the family of deceased sailor James Jacob said that the Navy will carry out full fledged investigation into the mishap and “correct the shortcomings”. Reiterating that the vessel- a torpedo recovery vessel- sank after flooding in the engine room- Dhowan said that the “material failure” that may have resulted into the flooding will be investigated.
Initial speculations have been pointing towards failure of seals in the engine room that prevent water from entering the engine room. “It is an unfortunate incident and has been taken with great seriousness. It is a torpedo recovery vessel…I have spoken to the crew..why the flooding happened…it is a serous concern,” Dhowan, who returned to India after cutting short his official visit to Seychelles in the aftermath of the mishap said. As reported earlier, the vessel had undergone timely refits and the last major refit had taken place about a year ago.
A- 72, a Torpedo Recovery Vessel (TRV) of the Indian navy sank 65 km off Vishakhapatnam coast on Thursday evening killing one sailor. While four navy personnel including an officer and three sailors have been missing, 24 of the 29 personnel on boar including personnel from NSTL and from the Navy’s Armament Directorate have been missing.
