SC judge Dipak Misra who rejected Yakub’s plea gets threat letter, security beefed up

Supreme Court judge Justice Dipak Misra, who handed down death penalty to 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon, received an anonymous threat letter at his residence in Tuglak Road area on Friday. Reacting immediately on this complaint, a case was registered at Tughlak Road police station and security was beefed up outside Misra’s residence.

Confirming the threat letter, JCP (New Delhi range) M K Meena said it letter was received and a case has been registered.

Police sources said that the letter, written in red ink, read, “By hanging Yakub, you did wrong. This will be avenged. We have already come to Delhi. Beef up your security as much as you like.” Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi range) M K Meena said police are probing the matter, but refused to divulge further details.

Police sources said that the incident came to light on Tuesday when the letter was found at the gate of Justice Misra’s residence by the security personnel. “The security personnel of Misra immediately informed their security incharge who in turn approached the police personnel at Tughlak Road police station. The security incharge later lodged his complaint with the police,” police sources added.

After registering the case, police started their investigation and a special team of three officers from the special cell has also met with the SHO (Tughlak road police station) regarding the incident. “They have shared all the details related with the investigation. The local police has already recorded the statements of all the security personnel and other staff,” police sources said.

After an unprecedented 90-minute hearing that started at 3.20 am and ended a little before dawn, the Justice Misra headed three-judge Bench had delivered the verdict that sealed Memon’s fate on July 30.
