Sanjay Dutt gets furlough

From May 2013, Sanjay Dutt has been serving 42 months of his five-year sentence for illegal possession of arms in a case related to the 1993 serial blasts, in which over 250 people were killed and several were wounded.

The 55-year-old had been in jail for the remaining 18 months in the case in the past. Jail superintendent Yogesh Desai said Yerawada jail has received the application of Dutt approved by the deputy inspector general. Jail officers said furlough can be extended for 14 more days. Dutt may walk out of the jail on Wednesday if formalities are over.

From May 2013 to May this year, he has spent over 118 days either on parole or furlough and has been in jail since March. As per rules, a furlough is right of every convict. A parole is granted so that a convict can attend to urgent family matters.
