Sanja Morcha on Thursday held a dharna against the Punjab government in Bathinda under heavy police cover after it was not allowed to use a protest venue located opposite to the DC complex.

According to the party,it was not allowed to hold the protest at the last moment even though it had taken prior permission for it. DIG A S Chahal, however, said: “Transport Nagar — located outside the city area — is the only place meant for dharnas,if the road next to the DC complex is blocked,it leads to traffic jams. We cannot allow dharnas here.”

When told that at the said spot, dharnas are normally an order of the day,he said: “I am not aware of any dharnas that had taken place on this road in the past.”

He added that after staging a dharna, people can come in a deputation to submit a memorandum at the DC complex. “Such dharnas will not be allowed in future as well outside the DC Complex road,” said Chahal.

The Morcha, meanwhile, held the protest on the roadside and demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal for the firing in Adampur village where one PPP worker was shot dead and another three sustained injuries. A memorandum in this regard, addressed to the Punjab Governor, was submitted to the Bathinda DC.

“We want either the CBI to probe the case or a judicial inquiry by the Punjab and Haryana High Court because we have no faith on the Punjab Police. This is a criminal conspiracy of Sukhbir Singh Badal,” said PPP president Manpreet Singh Badal.

“The party will hold another meeting to chalk out further plans. We will also request the Punjab Chief Election Commissioner to verify all election related complaints,” he added.
