THE NDA government has appointed Research and Analysis Service (RAS) officer Rajinder Khanna as the chief of Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW), the country’s external intelligence wing. The post has so far been always occupied by an officer from the IAS or IPS.

Khanna superseded his batchmate Arvind Saxena, also belonging to the RAS, to the post. Saxena has been appointed director and ex-officio secretary of the Aviation Research Centre (ARC), a wing of R&AW, and will report directly to National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

Both Saxena and Khanna have served in the R&AW for most part of their careers.
Khanna will take charge on December 31 when the incumbent chief Alok Joshi retires. Khanna will hold the post for the next two years.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) also cleared the appointment of 1977 batch IPS officer Prakash Mishra as the new chief of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Mishra, who is now special secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, was also in the running to be CBI chief.

The order cleared by the ACC said, “Appointment of Shri Arvind Saxena, as Director and ex-officio Special Secretary, ARC, from the date of assumption of charge of the post and up to 31.08.2015 (the date of his superannuation) or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
