A four-year-old boy on Monday drowned at Gaukaran pond in Rohtak’s Baba Lakshmanpuri Colony. The boy,who went missing from his home in the morning, was found stuck in a water pump valve of the pond.

The deceased have been identified as Vishal, who had entered the pond to take a bath. Though the rescue team initially looked for the boy at the pond,he could not be found.

The officials then took out a iron valve attached to a pump — through which pond water was being taken out for cleaning purposes — with the help of a JCB machine and the boy was found stuck there.

According to the police,Vishal had gone to a pond located in the Baba Lakshmanpuri Temple with his friends. A religious function was in progress at the temple and water was being released from the pond with the help of pressure valves. Flowers and empty bottles were also floating in the water.

“When Vishal tried to grab some flowers,he could not sustain the water pressure and got sucked into the huge pump being used to take out pond water for cleaning purposes. The rescue operation went on for more than four hours, but the child was already dead by the time he was recovered,” said Inspector Kulbir Singh.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination to Rohtak’s Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. Vishal is survived by his parents and two elder sisters.
