Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal was admitted to the state-run JJ Hospital Thursday after his health condition weakened at the Arthur Road Jail where he is lodged in solitary confinement for his alleged role in terror activities. Ansari has been fasting for the last 36 days demanding that he be allowed to mingle with other prisoners.
According to JJ Hospital’s Dean Dr T P Lahane, Ansari was brought to the hospital late in the afternoon for a health check-up. “All his tests were cleared. His medical parameters were found normal. We discharged him immediately,” Lahane said.

However, according to doctors from the hospital’s psychiatry unit, two senior psychiatrists later visited Ansari in jail to convince him to break his fast. “In such a case, where a person starts fasting, psychiatrists have to make sure they are not suffering from any mental ailment. An attempt was also made to persuade him to start eating,” said a doctor from psychiatry department. Ansari is an accused in the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008 and a co-accused in the 2010 German Bakery blast case of Pune.
