A plea was filed in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the government’s proposal to hold the Assembly Session in public for passing the Lokpal Bill.
Hearing the plea, the court asked the government to reply if Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung took the decision to hold session outside the Assembly. According to the constitutional provisions, L-G has discretionary powers to allow the Assembly in public.
Notably, Kejriwal had announced during his Republic Day address at Chhatrasal stadium that the Jan Lokpal Bill would be passed in February at the Ramlila Maidan in Central Delhi. He had said a special session would be held at the ground to pass the Bill.
Following the announcement, the Delhi Police had written to Kejriwal, expressing concern over holding a special session in Ramlila Maidan. Police said it feared a breakdown in the law-and-order situation, apart from causing traffic problems, if it was held at Ramlila Maidan.
