With Congress failing to get majority in Haryana assembly elections and its show not coming up to expectation, the party on Thursday said a bit of overconfidence and complacency was responsible for it.
It is true that we got less seats in Haryana than what we had expected there. The party will analyse it, AICC general secretary and the partys media department in-charge Janardan Dwivedi told reporters here.
He was responding to queries why the party got less number of seats in this election in comparison to the last assembly election in which it had won 67 of the 90 seats.
Asked about the reason for the loss in Haryana,AICC General Secretary B K Hariprasad said there was a bit of overconfidence in Haryana. Overconfidence leads to complacency and one has to sometime pay a price for it. Another senior party leader on condition of anonymity however attributed the loss to the division in Jat votes and selection of some wrong candidates under pressure.
In the last four and half years,Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had become the unquestioned Jat leader pushing INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala into a corner. But due to internal fights and statements by a few leaders this time, somehow a message went that the party may go for a change in the leadership of the state after elections.
Hence a section of Jat voters chose to vote for Chautala leading to such results for Congress. There was no division in non-Jat votes. Otherwise, parties like BJP and Haryana Janhit Congress would have fared better, Hariprasad said.
