The Congress on Friday accused the NDA government of trying to weaken the MGNREGA scheme. Arguing that the Rural Development Ministry’s criticism of the UPA government’s rural job guarantee scheme was deplorable, the party said the “narrow-minded politics” being pursued by the government was unprecedented.
“India has never experienced politics of this narrow kind… Matters of national interest have neither political boundary nor governmental boundary,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said. He accused the government of “slowly and stealthily” weakening the scheme to a level when it can be criticised for being not effective. “This is not a scheme targeting backwards or SC or ST or ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ class.
The very purpose of the scheme was the whole of rural India… How is it possible to justify that this reduction is done seven or eight years after the scheme is stabilised. The scheme is operative. Nobody has complained about the coverage,” he said. Asked if the government’s move could be challenged in a court of law, he said it was possible.
