It is no longer militancy or gang wars but vehicle lifting and theft that have become a headache for the police in Jammu. The winter capital has witnessed an increase in cases of vehicle lifting and theft in the last few months.

The police has arrested about a dozen people in a week from different parts of the city. They have also recovered about two-dozen vehicles, including cars and motorbikes, and gold ornaments that had been stolen in recent months. Police officials said that investigations in some other cases are on.

“A few days back,we arrested three persons and recovered stolen vehicles from them, and just two days back we arrested two persons and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs one lakh,” SSP Jammu Manohar Singh said. “We recently busted a gang of motorcycle lifters, who also snatched chains and wallets and recovered goods worth about Rs 5 lakh from them.”

Manohar Singh, however, could not confirm if those involved in these cases had inter-state links but said that some such gangs of vehicle lifters are active in Jammu.

He further said that many people who have been apprehended in such cases have no criminal record,so it is difficult to trace and identify them.

Separate police teams to solve only such cases and have been constituted,Singh added.

Since last September,Jammu police has recovered more than 50 stolen vehicles and items worth 25 lakhs but many cases still remain unsolved.
