NCP chief and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, speaking at a programme organised by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari’s Purti Group here on Saturday, said “there should be no untouchability in social and political spheres of life”.

It assumes significance in view of Pawar’s recent face-off with ally Congress on the issue of the ordinance on convicted MPs and his party’s tussle with the Congress in the state.

Though NCP officially played it down as a “non-political” programme, insiders feel Pawar’s second attendance this year at Gadkari’s programme, that too despite BJP leaders Gopinath Munde and Devendra Fadnavis recent ridicule of Ajit Pawar as Maharashtra’s Lalu Prasad who would be sent to jail,is a political message to the Congress.

Addressing the gathering,Pawar said,“Journalists asked me why I was attending Gadkari’s programme. I feel there should be no untouchability in social work and politics.”

He said in lighter vein,“But elections are round the corner and we won’t fall short of words in taking on the political rivals.” Gadkari praised Pawar as someone who stood solidly behind constructive works.
