Though former IPL chief Lalit Modi has claimed that there is a threat to his life from the underworld if he returned to India, the security audit reports of the Mumbai Police do not indicate any such threat to his life.

According to senior Mumbai police officers, there has been no security threat to Modi’s life in the recent past. The last security assessment of Modi and his family was done in June 2010 which stated that no security cover was required for him.

“At least in the audits carried out by us in the recent past, we did not find threat to Modi’s life. Also, after a person steps out of our jurisdiction, we do not carry out the security audit of that person,” a Mumbai Police officer said. However, if the police learn about a threat to an Indian national, it is communicated to the Ministry of Home Affairs for further follow up. “But at least in the last one year we have not picked up any intelligence inputs that suggested that there is a threat to Modi from the underworld,” the officer said.

In 2009, the Maharashtra State Intelligence Department (SID) had sent an input to the Mumbai Police of threat to Modi and his family allegedly from the Chhota Shakeel gang. The threat perception continued till early 2010 with the Mumbai Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) sending a fresh intelligence input of threat to Modi and his family even outside India. By then, Modi had moved to the UK.

“The April 2009 input was generated after an alleged shooter — Rashid Malabari of Chhota Shakeel gang — during his interrogation revealed that Modi was on the hit list of his boss. The threat was in connection with the betting in IPL Season 3 and was aimed to ‘silence’ Modi in connection with the role of certain politicians in the betting,” police source said.

Following this, the Mumbai Police provided security to Modi. However after a review meeting in June 2010, the security was withdrawn.
