Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday came out in defence of US-based Kashmiri lobbyist Ghulam Nabi Fai saying “money is needed” for struggle and termed his arrest as a “setback” to attempts at solving the Kashmir issue peacefully.

“Kashmir struggle is not for commercial interests but money is needed,It is a tragic thing that it is continuously being blamed on Kashmiri leadership and diaspora as if Kashmir struggle was for commercial interests,” Mirwaiz said.

He hoped justice will be done.

“It is every Kashmiri’s duty to work for the cause of Kashmir,” he said.

The Hurriyat dove said it was unlikely that Fai’s arrest will have any impact on coming Indo-Pak Foriegn Ministers’ talks.

“It (the arrest) has caused a setback to the peaceful efforts to solve the Kashmir issue. Hurriyat wants to clear it that Kashmir struggle is indigenous, not at the behest of any country or organisation,” Mirwaiz said.

He said it was unfair to say that the Kashmir struggle was for monetary gains when America in its “war on terror” is spending billions of dollars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“We support the work being done by Kashmiri diaspora and we are sure while keeping in view the laws of their respective countries they will continue to work for the Kashmir cause,” he said.
