A second year B-Tech student committed suicide in his hostel room after he was allegedly ragged and humiliated by a group of seniors at a private engineering institute at Partapur road in Meerut on Friday.

After the incident, students damaged buses of the institute, overturned vehicles belonging to the staff and blocked the Delhi-Hardwar Highway (NH-58) for nearly an hour, forcing the Partapur police to lodge an FIR against the hostel’s chief warden, the institute’s registrar and 16 others, including students.

While the warden has been arrested, the police have yet to take any action against others named in the FIR.

The victim’s father has alleged in his complaint that his son, Kalpit Tyagi, a resident of Bijore district, took the step after prolonged ragging, but the police have not mentioned ragging in their FIR. They have instead charged the accused with abetment to suicide.

“We have arrested the chief warden and our investigation is on. Ragging sections will be included in the FIR if we find evidence,” Surendra Nath of Partapur police station told The Sunday Express. On Friday, before the incident occurred, Tyagi’s father Sanjeev Kumar had met school authorities to broker a peace agreement between Tyagi and the group of students who allegedly physically tortured him. Kumar, a medical representative, said the authorities forced him to sign a mutual consent letter which stated that both sides would not physically torture one another.
