A man who was arrested on June 22 for killing his two-year-old step-daughter and sent to jail custody in Nalbari district in lower Assam committed suicide by hanging himself to death in the Nalbari district jail, police said on Tuesday.
Nalbari Superintendent of Police BM Rajkhowa said Pranjal Baishya, a contract worker with a factory in Guwahati had on June 22 taken his step-daughter Dolly to village Bori in Nalbari district where he killed the girl and left her body inside the toilet of the village primary school. He then went to an aunt’s house in a nearby village.
“But even as some villagers discovered the girl’s body in the school premises and raised an alarm, his uncle immediately questioned him, to which he admitted to the crime. The uncle then took him to the local police station and handed him over to the police the same evening,” SP Rajkhowa said.
Baishya, who initially tried to mislead the police by claiming that there was another person with him involved in the crime, later admitted that he had on his own taken the girl (his wife daughter by a previous marriage) to Nalbari on the pretext of taking her to the zoo, and killed her with a knife.
“The man claimed he killed the girl because she was not his daughter and that his wife, who had told her of her previous marriage had apparently not disclosed to him that she had a daughter from her previous husband,” the SP said.
While Baishya was found hanging to death in a toilet of the Nalbari district jail in the wee hours of Monday, an inquiry has been instituted to ascertain how he could manage to go to the toilet alone and could hang himself to death.
