A controversy erupted over the postmortem of two SAIL DGMs N K Katariya and B K Singh, who died on Thursday in a gas leak. The relatives of Katariya, who had come from Ujjain, sat on a dharna outside Bhilai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital on Friday evening demanding his body be handed over immediately. Since the postmortem was yet to be done, the hospital authorities turned down their demand.

They noted that under the rules, postmortem can be done only during daytime and the bodies could be given only on Saturday. Katariya’s relatives threatened to commit suicide outside the hospital if the body was not handed over immediately.

While the postmortem of four other victims was conducted on Friday and the bodies were handed over to the relatives, the postmortem of Singh and Katariya was delayed.

However, the hospital authorities, claimed some relatives had earlier informed them that since they would perform the funeral on Saturday, the bodies should be handed over to them only then.

Meanwhile, the father of another victim, master technician Antonious Samuel, reached Bhilai from Jabalpur on Friday. He was a supervisor at the same plant before his retirement where his son died at the age of 48. Samuel is survived by two sons.
