Kerala government would launch multi-media digital collaborative textbooks in government schools on experimental basis starting this academic year as a project to mark the fourth anniversary of the government.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who announced a slew of projects, on Monday, said this was the first time in the country that a state is introducing digital collaborative textbooks in schools. The project would be implemented by the IT @ School under the Education Department.

The digital textbooks would be made available in computer and mobile phones. In Kerala, most of the schools have broadband internet facility. Initially the scheme would be launched in high schools, Education Department sources said.

Under this scheme, text books would be scanned and uploaded. By clicking at marked spots in the online pages, a person would get details related to the relevant portion of the textbook in audio and video formats. The audio and video content would include explanations from subject experts. The video content facility would enable the students to get information from renowned scientists and experts. A particular topic would have explanations from more than one person.
