Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala gave his assent for the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Amendment Bill 2015 which makes voting compulsory in panchayat polls, rural development minister H K Patil stated.
The Karnataka Panchayat Raj Amendment Bill, 2015 that was passed by the legislature in March was recently given the assent by Governor Vala who had earlier sought clarifications. The bill, like the Gujarat Local Authorities Laws Bill, 2009, makes voting compulsory but violations will not attract legal sanctions, the minister added.
“The Governor had sought some legal clarification on making voting mandatory in gram panchayat elections… We have given him the clarifications. Accordingly, he has given his assent to the bill,” Patil said. The amended bill is set to be in force during panchayat elections that are scheduled to be held in Karnataka at the end of May.
Among the other changes the new law will bring 50 per cent reservation for women and a None Of The Above (NOTA) option.
