Farmers in Jammu & Kashmir will now be eligible for an over 30 per cent higher compensation even if 33 per cent of their standing crop or fruit trees get damaged due to natural calamity as the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government on Sunday amended the State Disaster Response Fund’s (SDRF) norms of disbursing compensation.
Earlier, such relief was extended to those suffering minimum 50 per cent damage to their produce.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Sayeed. In view of widespread damage caused during the recent spate of rain and floods, the cabinet also enhanced the quantum of relief by nearly 33 per cent, said Education Minister Nayeem Akhtar.
The cabinet also approved an amendment in the recruitment policy that will enable Deputy Commissioners to appoint people on contractual basis against gazetted and non-gazetted vacancies in their respective districts that need to be filled up on emergency basis in public interest. There are nearly 11,000 such vacancies in the state.
Akhtar pointed out that the vacancies won’t involve those which have already been referred by government to the public service commission or the state subordinate services recruitment board. These appointments will be made on a contractual basis for a period of seven years , Akhtar said, adding that services will be regularised after assessment of the performance at the completion of the contract period.
