The Congress on Friday said Union minister and senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s suggestion that Congress leaders should retire at 70 was his “personal view”. In an interview, Ramesh had suggested a retirement age of 70 be fixed for leaders in his party and called for elders to become advisors.

“Ramesh is a senior leader. It may be his view. The party believes that experience and youth will together propel the country forward,” Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala said.

Ramesh, who will turn 60 next month, had said if and when Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi becomes PM, he will have a “young Cabinet”, effectively ruling the old guard out of the scheme of things.

“A generational change is absolutely essential to renew any organisation. Otherwise, an organisation will ossify,” Ramesh had said.
