A senior police officer in Bangalore has dismissed as “rhetoric” the online threats he received for arresting Mehdi Masroor Biswas, the alleged owner of pro-Islamic state Twitter handle @ShamiWitness.
One of the Twitter messages directed at DCP (Crime) Abhishek Goyal, whose crime branch unit arrested Mehdi (24) said, “@goyal_abhei we will not leave our brothers in your hand Revenge is coming wait for our reaction (sic)”. The post emanated from Twitter handle @abouanfal6, which is associated with an individual who identified himself as Abouanfal Almaghribi. Another message from @xahjaved said, “Hell awaits him”.

“Mostly just rhetoric’’ was the police officer’s reaction on the threats to him. “Personally I am not taking the threat very seriously. Not much alarmed.’’
Meanwhile, the Bangalore police obtained five days custody of Mehdi from a local magistrate. He also was taken to his apartment as part of an evidence gathering exercise.
JCP (Crime) Hemanth Nimbalkar said police were looking into whether Mehdi was part of a sleeper cell and his connections in the city. The investigators are also studying the individual profiles of his followers at @ShamiWitness after downloading cached information of online interactions involving the handle.

“Preliminary probe shows that he is a propagandist of ISIS ideology and has been instrumental in influencing minds against the nations, which are at war or supporting the war against the Islamic state. His virtual and actual relations are under intense scrutiny. Probe is looking into every possible way of his connect with the virtual and actual world,” Nimbalkar said.
Mehdi has been arrested under Sec 125 of IPC (for waging war against an Asiatic power in alliance or at peace with the Government of India) and Sections 18 and 39 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Section 66 of the Information Technology Act.
