A human limb was found at a dumpyard near Mizoram capital Aizawl on Monday morning, stoking fears it may be the most recent in a spate of murders witnessed by the city, and the state, over the past few months.
But according to police, it turns out the limb was the amputated leg of a male cancer patient from eastern Khawzawl town and which appears to have been mixed up with normal garbage that found it’s way in a dump-truck to the dumpyard at Tuirial.
The Aizawl Civil Hospital has initiated an inquiry into how the amputated body part was misplaced and thrown into the bin and not sent to the incinerator, Medical Superintendent Dr Rosangluaia said, adding he was alerted about the incident in the morning by orthopedic doctors serving at Mizoram’s busiest hospital.
The Civil Hospital authorities also began looking for the limb so they could take it back and send it to the incinerator for safe disposal.
But senior police officers said a team was immediately dispatched to the dumpyard after ragpickers alerted them about the find and , but that the ragpickers had burned the limb before they could recover it.
