A hajj pilgrim from Kerala was among the 107 people killed after a construction crane crashed onto the Grand Mosque in Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The crane had collapsed as a result of heavy rain and strong winds throughout the night.

The victim from Kerala was identified as Maimun, 33, wife of Ismail. The couple hailed from Kalmandapam in Palakkad district. They had reached Mecca three days back via a private hajj operator. Family sources said that Ismail sustained minor injuries in the incident.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that two Indians have been killed and 15 others injured in the tragedy. Pictures of the incident on Twitter showed bloodied bodies strewn across a courtyard where the top part of the crane, which appeared to have bent or snapped, had crashed into the building which is several storeys high.
