With the land ordinance set to lapse on August 31, Rural Development Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh said Thursday that the government has to wait for the recommendations of the Joint Committee of Parliament looking into the land acquisition Bill before taking any decision on the issue.
“At the fag end of Monsoon session, the Joint Committee of Parliament looking into the land Bill sought extension of its term till the next session of Parliament. We have to wait for their recommendations,” he replied when asked about the options before the government.

Asked whether the government will allow the ordinance to lapse, Singh said: “That is to be seen. The ball is in the court of the Joint Committee of Parliament.”
He said the ordinance was promulgated to include 13 excluded Central laws that were left out when the land acquisition Act was passed by the previous UPA government in 2013. “It is beyond my understanding why these 13 Acts were left out. The prime consideration behind promulgating the ordinance was to ensure that compensation is applicable to farmers,” he said.
