The government, which recently shortlisted six distinguished lawyers under the category of ‘eminent jurist’ for the appointment of the Lokpal, has now changed the list, retaining only two of the initial names.

The government has been attempting to push for the appointment of the Lokpal before the Lok Sabha polls. Names for the selection panel would be discussed in a meeting on February 3.

The names of the six jurists initially doing the rounds were Soli Sorabjee, Fali S Nariman, K Parasaran, K K Venugopal, Harish Salve and Attorney General G E Vahanvati.

But most of these names, including Vahanvati’s, are missing from the new list. Vahanvati’s was the last name to be shortlisted after the government pushed for his case, sources said.

The new list retains only K Parasaran, former Attorneys General of India, and Fali S Nariman, a distinguished constitutional jurist.

Five other names in the new list are senior advocate P P Rao, Prof Upendra Baxi, Prof N R Madhava Menon, K N Chandrasekharan Pillai and Prof Mohan Gopal.
