With protests over the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan at the helm of the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) refusing to die down, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Tuesday constituted a team to assess the ground situation at the institute.
Sources in the I&B Ministry said that the team comprising senior officials will visit the institute in an attempt to resolve the crisis. The team is expected to visit on August 21.
U C Bodke, Registrar, FTII said, “We received a call from the I&B Ministry. They will come down to the city to meet the student representatives and hold talks.”

The latest flashpoint came on Monday when students gheraoed Director Prashant Pathrabe in his office in Pune over the “assessment” process. Opposing the assessment of the incomplete diploma film projects of the 2008 batch, the FTII Students’ Association (FSA) has called the “assessment” unjustified.
FTII authorities, meanwhile, have held that the process is important for the premier institution.
Ranjeet Nair, a representative of FSA said, “Had one or two students failed to complete their projects, the government’s stand would have been justified. But here, the whole batch hasn’t been able to complete. This is due to the failure of administration and lack of infrastructure.
“Pathrabe told us that he had decided to assess. We were left with no other option but to gherao him,” he said.
