On a day when the Supreme Court agreed to hear a plea seeking a CBI probe into the Vyapam scam that has snowballed into an issue of national prominence, Law Minister Sadananda Gowda brushed aside the seriousness of the scandal, calling it ‘a silly issue.’

When queried by reporters as to whether the PM should speak on the scam, Gowda said Narendra Modi does not have to ‘answer on silly issues.’ He added that the party president and concerned ministers have spoken on the issue.

“Asking the PM to answer on each silly issue is not fair,” said Gowda.

The Law Minister’s insensitive comment has drawn several NSUI workers onto the streets in Bengaluru with slogans and placards.

In the Vyapam scam, also known as the MPPEB scam, bribes were allegedly taken by several senior politicians, bureaucrats and middlemen for allowing impostors to write recruitment examinations for appointments to government posts. The scandal, that first erupted in 2013, has shaken the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh and led to mysterious deaths of several people involved in the scam. On his part, the CM has said that all deaths are ‘natural.’

The Congress, both at the state and central level, have demanded an impassioned CBI probe into the scam, which is currently being investigated by the Madhya Pradesh police.
