Even as day-long torrential rains in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya triggered off fresh panic of renewed flash floods in the adjoining Assam districts, chief minister Tarun Gogoi made an aerial survey of the flood-ravaged areas and identified rehabilitation of the affected people.
Union minister of state for sports and youth affairs Sarbananda Sonowal too visited the flood-affected Goalpara and Kamrup districts and said the Centre would extend all help provided the state government sent a detailed report as early as possible.
With the recovery of one more body late Thursday evening, the death toll due in the current wave of floods in Assam rose to 37. In neighbouring Meghalaya, at least 41 persons have lost their lives till Friday. Official sources said over eight lakh population have been affected in the current wave of floods in Assam. While about 1.6 lakh people have been put up in 59 relief camps and 122 shelter places, over one lakh people have taken shelter on highways and other elevated places.
