Five school children dead as jeep collides with truck in north Bengal

The accident took place when the children, all from the same village, were returning home from a school.

At least five school children were killed when the Bolero they were travelling in collided with a truck on National Highway no 31 in North Dinajpur district of West Bengal on Thursday afternoon.

The accident took place when the children, all from the same village, were returning home from a school in Kishanganj district of Bihar. The highway runs parallel to the border of Bengal and Bihar.

Speaking to the IndianExpress.com, District Magistrate of Kishanganj Animesh Kumar Parashar said, “Five children are dead in the accident and others have been sent to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.”

According to Akram Niyaz, who visited the accident site later, the truck was on the wrong lane and the jeep driver could not see it coming in. He said the death toll could be more than ten as the condition of the injured are critical.
