While proceedings in the sensational Faridkot minor abduction and rape case may have ended with a local court sending prime accused Nishan Singh to jail for life, this, however,is not the youth’s first run-in with crime. Members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) in the Faridkot kidnapping case claim that Nishan Singh, who boasts of big political connections, has at least 18 cases pending against him; including for ones like rape, abduction and attempt to murder.

Police action in the minor abduction case, however, came only after mass involvement, the JAC members, who took out a victory procession Tuesday in Faridkot to express happiness over the the court decision, said.

The JAC claims that one Rajwinder Singh Ghali, who was sentenced to seven years in jail along with eight others in the case, also has several cases, including one on murder charge, pending against him.

Recalling the abduction case,Rajinder Singh,a JAC member, said: “On September 24,2012 Nishan Singh with the help of Rajwinder and few abducted the 15-year-old minor, attacked her family members even opened fire in the air. Rajwinder had given threat that no one can do anything against them because of their political connections.”

Soon after the abduction in September last year,a few people had gathered outside the police station but they were joined by hundreds the following before Faridkot was shut in protest.

According to Dilip Singh, this forced the police to take action. The 60-day struggle of the committee members resulted in the arrest of Nishan Singh and 20 other accused in this case. On Tuesday, members of Punjab Students Union,Bharti Kisan Union and a few other organisations hailed the court’s decision and held a rally.

Faridkot Cops pay heavy price

The case had cost the Faridkot police dearly. Sources revealed that nearly Rs 9 lakh was spent on petrol alone besides the expense on air tickets of officers who had gone to Goa. Raids had been conducted at 300 rooms simultaneously in Delhi and were part of the Operation New Star – the police code for nabbing Nishant Singh.
