Inside the massive multi-axle airconditioned Volvo bus, we did not realize the intensity and ferocity of the wind blowing outside.
It was 8 am. First, the bus started rocking like a boat and the driver reduced speed. A second later, the glass panes at seat 2 and 3 shattered with a loud bang and strong gusts of rain entered the bus.
Amid screams from terrified passengers, the driver stopped the bus. But it started shaking so violently that the driver of a truck parked on the opposite direction asked the driver to park it close beside his truck so the bus doesn’t tip over.
The glass pane on the opposite end also bowed to ferocity of the high speed wind and it gave an eerie feeling as it whistled through the bus.
Wind speeds in Visakhapatnam touched 190 kms per hour as cyclone Hudhud made landfall.
The city bore the brunt as hundreds of trees, power and communication lines and signboards collapsed blocking roads. Two persons were killed in separate rain-related incidents in Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh.
