The heads have begun to roll in the Rs 130-crore drug haul case as Punjab Police Thursday dismissed international boxer Ram Singh,a head constable with the department, and sub-inspector Sarabjit Singh from the service.
While Ram Singh, the Olympian pugilist Vijender Singhs sparring partner, has been dismissed for being a consumer of the drugs he procured from NRI drug smuggler Anoop Singh Kahlon,Sarabjit lost his job after it was found that he is an active member of the Kahlon gang. Sarabjit is also accused of helping on-the-run drug kingpin Jagdish Bhola and both are allegedly in hiding together.
Earlier,Kahlon alias Ruby, and his associate Rocky were arrested on March 3 by the Fatehgarh Sahib police and interrogation led to recovery of 26 kg drugs worth Rs 130-crore from Zirakpur.
Vijenders car, registered in his wifes name was found parked outside Kahlons house when the contraband was recovered. Vijender had told the police that his car was used by Ram Singh while he was away in Mumbai.
Ram Singh was questioned by the police over several days in the case during which he admitted that he had tried heroin for fun on some occasions with Vijender.
Stating that Ram Singhs role as a consumer of drugs has been conclusively established,a Punjab police press communiqué added that he had been associating himself with Kahlon and Rocky and was procuring drugs from them.
Fatehgarh Sahib police had sent a report on this to the Commandant,2nd Cdo Battallion, which is the parent unit of Ram Singh. On Thursday, the commandant dismissed Ram Singh from the service invoking the provisions of Article 311(2).
Meanwhile the police is yet to make its findings on Vijender,a Deputy Supreintendent of Police (DSP) in Haryana Police, public. Vijender had refused to give consent to the police to collect his hair and blood samples for forensic examination, something that goes against the boxer as far as the investigations are concerned, the police said, adding they will be moving the court for the samples for forensic investigations.
Earlier Wednesday, the police raided the residence of dismissed SI,Sarabjit,at Naya Gaon and recovered 2.6 kg opium and 1 kg powder (which is yet to be tested) and packing material for the contraband. The packing material is similar to the one used to pack the contraband recovered from Bholas house, the police police said,adding,11 mobile phones and a 12 bore gun was also recovered from the house. Those present at the house could not produce any license for the gun.
Sarabjit was not present at his house and has been. Investigation has revealed that after Bhola absconded on March 7,he went to the house of Sarabjit on March 11 from where he made telephone calls to his associates using the mobile phone registered in the name of Sarabjits wife,Reet Sidhu. He aided Bhola in absconding and arranged the hideouts, said the police.
Sarabjit has worked under Harinder Singh Chahal, who remained the SSP Ferozepur and SSP Faridkot for several years. He remained the CIA in-charge under him at these places. Chahal is now retired and Sarabjit was posted in Patiala. He was allegedly involved in a drug related case earlier too and was dismissed from service. However,he was reinstated following the intervention of senior officers.
Police sources add that Sarabjit moves with three gunmen while he is entitled to none.
On a reference from Fatehgarh Sahib Police,SSP Patiala dismissed Sarabjit from service invoking the provisions of Article 311 (2) of the Constitution of India.
The police said police today recovered 10 kg rave drug powder worth Rs 10 crore from former militant Kulbir Singh Asamd of Karnal, who has earlier been arrested in this case.
