Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday slammed state DGP Sumedh Singh Saini for his “shameless self-praise”.

In a statement,Amarinder said Saini should have felt sorry and apologised to people of Punjab for failing to hold free and fair polls to zila parishads and block samitis.

Rubbishing police claims that the May 19 elections were peaceful,Amarinder asked: “If it was so,should it mean that all newspapers and television channels which showed violence, particularly in Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s Assembly constituency, were lying?”

On Saini’s assertion that Congress MLA Rana Gurmeet Sodhi had fabricated a murderous attack on him and bullet injury on his PA,he said: “It is shameful on part of the DGP to parrot what he has been preached by his political bosses.”

Regarding police claims that Sodhi’s PA had inflicted the bullet injury upon himself and inserted a used cartridge for the purpose,Amarinder claimed: “Even a naive person cannot buy this argument,as empty shell does not get into the body.

“Moreover,Rana (Sodhi) is himself an international shooter,he does not need to fabricate a story.”

“Instead, the police should feel ashamed for their partisan role during the elections. The very claim of the police that they had controlled everything,up to the booth level, was an admission that the elections were rigged. This is what precisely the Congress has been sayin,” he added.
