Emphasising that ‘barbaric’ attacks such as the ones in Samba and Kathua Thursday will not come in the way of resolving disputes through dialogue,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made it clear that his meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif is on track even as he condemned the ‘enemies of peace’ for the latest assault.
Singh, who had stopped in Frankfurt on his way to the US,was briefed on the attack in the morning.
PMs’ meet: India wants Pak to fix accountability for 26/11
We are firmly resolved to combat and defeat the terrorist menace that continues to receive encouragement and reinforcement from across the border. Such attacks will not deter us and will not succeed in derailing our efforts to find a resolution to all problems through a process of dialogue, he said.
Talks between the neighbours had come under attack after the killing of five Army jawans in a cross-border raid onAugust 5. While regular talks on bilateral issues that had been planned were not pursued after that attack, the government still decided in favour of a meeting with Sharif, scheduled to take place in New York on Sunday.
Indo-Pak stability though long and difficult, essential for region: US
Government sources said the meeting will be used to convey concerns on cross-border violence and terrorism. The feeling is that the attacks have been carried out by those elements across the border that do not believe in peace. This is one more in a series of provocations and barbaric actions by the enemies of peace, Singh said in his statement.
While the attack has come from across the border,a clear distinction is being made between forces in Pakistan that are against the peace process and the civilian government with which India wants to take forward the peace process.
The PM sought to differentiate between the perpetrators of the attack and stakeholders across the border who want to engage in peace. While the government had been quick to point to the connection of the Pakistani army to the cross-border killing of troops in august, the PM Thursday said it is vital to defeat the terrorist menace that receives encouragement and reinforcement from across the border.
BJP’s demand of cutting off diplomacy with Pak exactly what terrorists want: CPI
Stressing that peace is made with enemies, not friends, sources said that India will find a way to make that peace.
The PM also expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks. No words are strong enough to condemn the heinous terrorist attack on Hiranagar police station and the Army camp at Samba in Jammu and Kashmir this morning. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the brave Army and police officers,as well as the innocent civilians martyred in this cowardly attack, he said.
