Public servants who had been mandated to declare their assets and liabilities under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013 by December 31, will now be able to do so by April 30.

This comes after the government on Thursday extended the time limit for making such declarations by four months. The format for the submission of the statement regarding movable properties and for submission of the statement regarding debts and liabilities are also being revised and will be notified, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said in an order.

The move to extend the time-limit has ostensibly resulted following concerns raised by bureaucracy over putting details of their assets and liabilities, including that of their family members, in public domain.

All public servants are now mandated to file the returns of their assets and liabilities, including that of spouses and dependent family members, on March 31 every year on or before July 31 of that year. For the current year, the last date for filing these returns was originally September 15, which was first extended to December 31 and has now been pushed four months further.
