Darjeeling MP Ahluwalia adopts Naxalbari

Ahluwalia is only the second MP from the state to adopt a village under the scheme.

Naxalbari, the place in North Bengal which gave the Naxal movement of the 1960s-70s its name, has been adopted by BJP MP from Darjeeling S S Ahluwalia under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana — a scheme that seeks to bring development to villages that were neglected till now.

Ahluwalia is only the second MP from the state to adopt a village under the scheme. Earlier, Trinamool Congress MP Sultan Ahmed allegedly drew flak from party leadership after he decided to adopt Uluberia, even as the party had decided to boycott the scheme, known to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s heart.

“In fact, when the Prime Minister came to attend an election rally in my constituency during the Lok Sabha elections, he asked me about Naxalbari and said that the place is in the same state as it was when the uprising happened. He had asked me to develop it, that is why I adopted it under this scheme,” Ahluwalia said.
