Opposing the government’s move to open the state’s doors to multi-brand retail stores like Walmart, the CPM on Sunday asked Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to abandon such a step.

“This decision of opening FDI in retail in the county was opposed by a cross section of the people, including all the major political parties. Even the Congress, during the NDA regime, was opposed to the opening of this sector. We on behalf of the CPM,request you to not to allow this important sector being usurped by corporate giants,” CPM leader Tikender Singh Panwar wrote to Virbhadra.

Meanwhile,Food and Supplies Minister G S Bali, who addressed mediapersons at Kangra, ridiculed state BJP president Satpal Satti for criticising the government’s move to allow Walmart in Himachal.

Claiming that BJP was used to double speak,Bali said: “The BJP is supporting SAD in Punjab where Walmart has set up its stores long ago and is also involved in direct buying from farmers. Gujarat is another state where multi-brand companies were doing a booming business.”
