A couple from Ratia in Fatehabad district,belonging to the same caste,attempted suicide by consuming poisonous substance late on Monday night. While the girl,Kamlesh (19),has died,Gurjit Singh (20) is battling for his life at a civil hospital in Fatehabad.
The police have registered a case against Gurjit on charges of attempt to commit suicide. Gurjit is still not in a condition to give any statement. But we have registered a case against him for attempting suicide, Ratia police station SHO Jugal Kishore said.
Gurjit and Kamlesh were in a relationship for several months and wanted to get married,said police. They must have realised that as they were both Dalits,their parents would not allow them to live together. Thus,they attempted suicide by consuming celphose, Kishore said.
While Kamlesh was a college student,Gurjit used to run a barber shop in Ratia. Both used to stay in the same colony, the SHO added.
According to the police,The couple met at Gurjits residence on Monday and locked themselves in his room. After an hour,when Gurjits family came to know of it,they broke the door to his room to enter and found both lying on the floor. They were rushed to the hospital,where Kamlesh died
From Gurjits room,the police have recovered a suicide note,purportedly written by Kamlesh. In the suicide note,Kamlesh had said that she and Gurjit were committing suicide and none of their relatives should be held responsible for their death. It added that nobody was responsible for their decision of committing suicide, Kishore said.
Meanwhile,following a post mortem examination,Kamlesh was cremated on Tuesday.
