Punjab Congress MLAs today demanded disciplinary action against Raja Sansi MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria for “damaging the image of the party” and alleged that he was a puppet in the hands of the anti-Congress lobby.

The demand comes days after Sarkaria wrote to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi seeking a change of guard in the state party unit ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. He also requested that the reins of the party be handed back to Captain Amarinder Singh, who was succeeded by Partap Singh Bajwa as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief.

In a joint statement issued here, the MLAs —- including Kewal Singh Dhillon,Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi,Brahm Mohindra,Randeep Singh Nabha,Ajit Inder Singh Mofar,Rakesh Pandey,Amarinder Singh Raja Warring,Gurkirat Singh Kotli,Navtej Singh Cheema and Parminder Singh Pinky —- said Sarkaria’s letter to Sonia was part of a conspiracy to harm the prospects of the party in the coming elections.

The statement defended Bajwa, saying that his

eight-month stint as party chief was outstanding and unquestionable.

“Bajwa took a bold stand against wealth tax to force the central government to withdraw an amendment in this regard from the Finance Bill of 2013. Union Finance Minister P Chidamabram had specifically mentioned the name of Bajwa in his address on the Finance Bill in the Lok Sabha. The Punjab government was forced to hold and revise the rates of property tax. Bajwa had launched an agitation against corrupt ministers and forced Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to order an inquiry against the education minister involved in the book scam,” it said.

The statement alleged that Sarkaria was “hobnobbing with detractors of Bajwa, including SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal”…. “His (Sarkaria’s) business interests with Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majitha are no more a secret”.

It said that Sarkaria was keen to join SAD but his mentors found it more suitable to damage the Congress party from within.
