In a move that will help India in fetching back the category I status, the Union Cabinet is meeting at 4.30 pm on Friday to clear the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Bill.
“The cabinet is serious about clearing all the conditions required to get back the Category I status. In fact, the CAA bill is the only item on the agenda today,” said a source in the government.
The CAA will replace the current aviation regulator DGCA and will fulfill one of the promise made to the US FAA during their audit in December.
The FAA downgraded India to category II in January due to government not fulfilling these criteria.
A category II status means no more flights by Indian carriers to the US and it opens aircraft of Indian carriers to safety check by the US authorities.
The Civil Aviation Ministry would start talks with FAA after getting the approvals from the government.
