Even as the Centre has constituted a one-man expert committee headed by former Union home secretary G K Pillai to study the viability of creation of a separate Bodoland state, the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) has opposed it, saying there was no need for such a committee. “All that the Centre should do is announce creation of Bodoland,” said ABSU president Pramod Boro.
The Bodo People’s Front (BPF), an ally of the Congress, however, lauded the Centre’s decision and even organised a rally in Kokrajhar Sunday to welcome the committee.
Pillai is visiting Kokrajhar Tuesday to carry out a preliminary study of the ground situation. He is also scheduled to meet a cross-section of people during the visit.
“Setting up of the expert committee is the first important step towards creation of a separate Bodoland state. We welcome this timely decision. We are sure the committee will recommend creation of a separate state after meeting all sections of people,” said BPF chairman Hagrama Mohilary, who is also chief of the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Council.
Mohilary also hit out at the ABSU and said the students’ body was only trying to throw a spanner into the works by opposing or rejecting the expert committee.
