BMC has decided to pay employees a collective Diwali bonus of Rs 153 crore. The civic body spends over 60 per cent of its budget on salaries. “This is an ex-gratia of Rs 12,100. We have not decided anything on last year’s Diwali bonus, which was denied to employees who struck work,as the matter is still in court,” said Mayor Sunil Prabhu.

The bonus will be granted to 1,30,000 employees from the civic budget of approximately Rs 27,000 crore, which is meant for road and water works and solid waste management, among other needs.

Last year, the civic body had paid Rs 11,000 to each employee. On September 19 and 20,2011,over 40,000 BMC employees struck work demanding a salary raise according to the sixth pay commission, bringing all civic works — from garbage collection to public hospitals — to a standstill.

The industrial tribunal had declared the strike illegal on September 17.
