the opposition BJP today said his party will organise demonstrations tomorrow in protest against the violence.

“We will burn effigies of the state government outside tehsil offices in Sangli district to protest the government’s role in the riots,” BJP state president Nitin Gadkari told reporters here.

Alleging that Muslims were incited by the Congress-NCP- led government,Gadkari criticised Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Home Minister Jayant Patil for “mishandling” the situation.

“Both the Chief Minister and Home Minister failed to resolve the problem,” he said.

Referring to the tableau displaying Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj killing Afzal Khan, which had reportedly enraged a section of the people in Sangli district,Gadkari said “Muslims have no complaint against the depiction.” The city had been tense since Thursday when some members of minority community allegedly damaged a Ganesh pendal depicting the historical scene, according to police.

The authorities had also imposed curfew in the troubled district on Saturday night.

Meanwhile,BJP General Secretary Gopinath Munde was not allowed to visit Miraj today.
