A local court has ordered a time-bound investigation into a complaint by a man, who alleged a private hospital pretended to ‘treat’ his wife for days after her death to inflate the medical bill.
Madan Nandan Sahay, a resident of Tila Jamalpur, alleged doctors at LBS Hospital declared his 56-year-old wife Sushma dead on February 3, but put her on ventilator an hour later claiming she had recovered. She had been admitted the previous night after complaining of severe chest pain. “In that one hour, I informed some relatives about the funeral time. I was elated when doctors said she is alive,” Sahay said.
He said when the police refused to file an FIR, he filed a private complaint in a JMFC court which, on April 24, asked the Shahjahanabad Police Station to register an offence. PSI R S Jharia said based on the court order, an FIR had been registered against four doctors from the hospital. He said police will obtain the treatment papers and then seek expert opinion before making any arrests.
While seeking to file an FIR, Sahay said in his complaint the doctors on duty refused to let him or his family go near his ailing wife. He alleged the doctors kept asking for money and medicines for an angioplasty, and handed him a bill of Rs 8.5 lakh.
Director of LBS Hospital Dr Bhupendra Shrivastava, one of the four accused, dismissed the allegations, saying the hospital has all her records. “The dead don’t pass urine,” said Shrivastava. He said he had an audio recording of Sahay saying, “Yes, she smiled at me today.” He added the bill was Rs 1.8 lakh and had not been paid fully.
