Bangalore police chief: Celebrate Valentine’s without fear

The police chief’s assurance came in the wake of threats in the past by right-wing fringe groups to disrupt Valentine’s Day revelry by forcing couples into marriage.

Bangalore police on Friday assured people of celebrating Valentine’s Day without fear, saying they have made adequate security arrangement to ward off groups like Sri Ram Sene.

“On the occasion of Valentine’s Day, public can celebrate without any fear. There is no information of any obstruction,” Bangalore City Police Commissioner M N Reddi said in a statement on Friday. “If anybody objects or obstructs, police will take stringent action and initiate legal proceedings,’’ he said, noting that adequate security arrangements have been made in areas known to attract couples.

This year some groups like Sri Rama Sene have called for observing February 14 as “Mata-Pita or Parents Day” across the country.

“Tomorrow valentine day, adequate police deployed in central area, esp MG Rd, Brigde rd, sanky tank area. Wil not allow anyone 2 take law in their hands (sic),” DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil tweeted on Friday.
